Port of Johnstown Unveils New Propane Grain Dryer to Enhance Efficiency
EDWARDSBURGH CARDINAL, October 17, 2024 – The Port of Johnstown is excited to announce the completion of a new state-of-the-art propane grain dryer, significantly enhancing the facility's grain handling capabilities just in time for the 2024 corn harvest. This $6 million project, supported by the Agriculture Clean Technology (ACT) Program, aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and benefit local farmers.
The new grain dryer, built with advanced heat retention technology, is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 30-45%, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability. The project received up to $2 million in funding through the ACT Program's Adoption Stream, which supports Canadian agricultural operations in implementing cleaner technologies. The Port covered the remaining costs from its reserves.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the Port on October 17 marked the official launch of the grain dryer, with Edwardsburgh Cardinal Mayor Tory Deschamps hosting the event. "This new dryer will more than double our drying capacity, allowing us to handle soybean and corn simultaneously," said Mayor Deschamps. "This expansion addresses a significant constraint, as soybean harvest often overlaps with corn harvest, challenging our ability to process both crops efficiently."
Deputy Mayor Stephen Dillabough thanked MP Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, for his instrumental support in securing funding for the project. The Port’s General Manager, Robert Dalley, praised Project Manager Kevin Saunders for completing the project on time, ensuring its readiness for the busy harvest season. Dalley also introduced Leslie Drynan, who will assume the role of Port General Manager on October 21.
The event also recognized MP Steve Clark for his unwavering support of the Port, with a presentation of a commemorative jacket.
